The Lord Nissi and Your Banner Day
Where would we be without the LORD NISSI, defined as our banner over us as we journey on in our walk of faith - INCLUSIVE OF OUR MANY CONFLICTS? We find this special name for our Lord in Exodus 17:15 when “Moses built an altar and called the name of it Jehovah-Nissi.” A special name indeed, defining an altar fitting of devotion, relating to the Lord’s powerful deliverance from their enemy, the Amalekites (Exodus 17:8-15). Here’s the context as that historical battle and victory unfolded. The children of Israel were on their way to the promised land, recently led out of bondage, THEN, yes, then came the conflict. But why? And MY, what a “heads up” for the believer: as we are redeemed by his blood, bought and brought out of the bondage of sin; then, what is the reason that we then meet up with the enemy of our souls. Yes, the question is WHY? Well, just as with the children of Israel, the Lord has in his wisdom set us on a journey of faith with some inclusive “faith builders” as we “fight the good fight of faith” (I Timothy 6:12). Oh, take courage, because we have the banner of deliverance over us as we gracefully grow in the conflict, with the Lord himself being our Banner over us, leading us in victory. No need to be disheartened because of our testings and trials: “We will REJOICE in thy salvation, and in the name of the Lord we will set up our banner” (Psalm 20:5). The banner is our LORD NISSI; then, with his title known personally, the Lord becomes more than a name recognized by the believer. The reason: the LORD NISSI HIMSELF is over the believer and champions over his foes, leading him out of defeat and into to a successful, blessed Christian life. Yes, the LORD NISSI himself can be known PERSONALLY in your soul, and then HE can make your day and every day a joyful banner day, when you raise his banner high.
Make it a banner day and raise his banner high for the LORD NISSI is your victory. So, what about that name? Who exactly is the LORD over us as our BANNER in our Christian walk of faith? First of all, let’s look at the name Jehovah or LORD: HE is “The Eternal Existing ONE, the GREAT I AM” meaning “to be” and “to be known.” Then, with his added name NISSI attached to the title LORD, we can know him personally as the One lifted up over us as a Banner of deliverance. He “is to be and to become known as” our Banner. The Hebrew root word “NES” has within it the meaning of a pole to be lifted up with an insignia attached to it. In military conflict, the banner would be a focal point to direct attention away from the fear of the enemy and instill courage for the soldier to march on to the victory. The banner aroused the warrior’s devotion to the LEADER lifting high the banner, instilling the cause for the fight, and then inspiring their new found courage to go on and win the battle. Moses had a heart of devotion to the ONE who gave Israel their deliverance, and he then built an altar and named it JEHOVAH NISSI. Oh, look to your LORD NISSI with devotion, and build an altar on your heart and march on in victory. When that heart-felt action takes place, the Spirit of the LORD NISSI enlivens you within, for you to then lift high his banner of deliverance. Oh, lift high his banner because of the love that brought your deliverance (for HIS great love deemed a blood bought salvation), and then that banner will be cause for your rejoicing; no need to despair in the conflict: “We will rejoice in thy salvation and in the name of the Lord we will set up our banners” (Psalm 20:5). Make it a banner day every day; lift up your LORD NISSI HIGH empowered by the Spirit of Nissi within.
