The Other Bread

Posted by Pastor Dave Johnson on January 29, 2022

One of the most interesting and miraculous stories in the Bible is the account of Jesus and “The Feeding of the Five Thousand.” We know the story well, and we all have cherished its impact on those hungry souls being fed that day when little became a lot, a live-giving LOT. Those two fish and five loaves did go a long way that day when the Lord multiplied them with his miraculous supply in that desert place (Mark 6:35). When Jesus did the ministering, there was fish and bread sufficient for all, but there was another BREAD dispensed that day that would go a long way as well: “He began to teach them many things” (Mark 6:34). Could it be that the Lord taught them all about the LIVING BREAD? John, the Gospel writer quotes HIS words: “I am the Living Bread (and) as the Living Father hath sent me and I live by my Father, so he that eateth of me, he shall live by me” (John 6:51, 57). So, Jesus tells us that by partaking of heaven’s bread, we “shall live by me.” Eternally, yes, and also in the here and now; especially when considering the context: “When the day began to wear away” (Luke 9:12). Let’s look at that most important phrase regarding a “day wearing away,” all the while by partaking of HIS bread - Living.

First of all, when the Bible tells us that “the day began to wear away,” it is referring to those who were going through their exasperating experiences of that day. And they needed more than the five loaves of bread multiplied to fill their hungry souls, they needed the One who was the Bread, who brought forth the bread, including the Bread of Life. Could it be that of the many things that Jesus taught that day was that “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Yes, living by the Word of God, being the Bread for the soul, given from the Living Bread, is life essential when our day begins to wear away. Meaning a life in days far spent, wearing away, not possessing that which is now at a loss; that life is in need of the Word of life, the Bread of life, and when received, that man “shall live by me” (John 6:57, the Bread of Life, v. 51). Question: Anything wearing way in your day? Do you have a hungry soul, having been found in your “desert place” (Mark 6:35), then for Jesus to “teach you of many things?” Oh, partake of the Living Bread, and you “shall live” thereby (John 6:57). Remember what Jesus did say, “The words that I speak unto you are Spirit and they are life” (John 6:63). Then, since we are spirit, as well as body and soul, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Oh, dwell in the Word, partake of the Other MOST IMPORTANT Bread, the Living Bread, and you will not be wearing away in your day. “Thy words were found and I did eat them, and they were the joy and rejoicing of my heart” (Jeremiah 15:16).
